Clips Tab — Saved Text Snippets

In-app help — This section is generated automatically from the add-in source. Edit src/taskpane/helpContent.ts in the Base_Addin repo, then commit to update this page.

Clips let you save and reuse text selections from any document. Select text in Word, give it a name, and click "Save Selection as Clip".

To insert a clip, open the Clips tab and click the insert button next to the clip you want. The text is inserted at your current cursor position.

Clips can be tagged to make them easier to find. Use the tag filter above the clip list to narrow down your results.

Use "Export" to back up all your clips as a JSON file, and "Import" to restore them or share a clip set with a colleague.

Tips

  • Pro users can save unlimited clips. Free users are limited to 2.
  • Import is a Pro-only feature.
  • Tags are shared across all clips — use consistent names for best results.

What are clips?

Clips are reusable text snippets that you save from your Word documents and insert into other documents later. They preserve the original formatting (bold, italic, fonts, etc.) so the inserted text looks exactly as it did when you saved it.

Storage locations

Clips can be saved in two locations:

LocationBadgeDescription
Profile👤Saved to your user profile. Available in all your documents, on any device.
Document📄Saved to the current document only. Travels with the file when shared.

When to use each:

  • Use Profile for text you reuse often across many documents (e.g., your signature block, standard disclaimers).
  • Use Document for text specific to one document or workflow (e.g., project-specific clauses, temporary drafts).

Saving a clip

  1. Switch to the Clips tab in the task pane.
  2. Expand the New Clip section.
  3. Select the text you want to save in your Word document.
  4. Enter a Clip Name (e.g., "Standard disclaimer" or "Signature block").
  5. Optionally add Tags to categorise the clip (e.g., "legal, header, signature"). Separate tags with commas.
  6. Choose a Storage Location:
    • Profile — Available across all your documents
    • Document — Saved in this file only
  7. Click Save Selection as Clip.

The clip appears in the Saved Clips list below.

TIP

Document clips don't count toward your free clip limit — use them freely for document-specific content.

TIP

Tags make it easier to find clips later. Use consistent tag names across your clips for best results.

Viewing saved clips

All saved clips appear in the Saved Clips list on the Clips tab. Each clip shows:

  • The clip name
  • A storage location badge (👤 Profile or 📄 Document)
  • A short text preview
  • Any tags you assigned

Organizing clips

Use the organizer controls above the clips list to find and manage your clips:

Storage filters

Click the storage filter tabs to show clips by location:

  • All — Show all clips (Profile + Document)
  • 👤 Profile — Show only profile clips (available across documents)
  • 📄 Document — Show only clips saved in this document

Type in the search box to find clips by:

  • Clip name
  • Content (preview text)
  • Tags

Filtering by tag

If you have tagged your clips, a tag filter bar appears above the clips list. Click a tag to show only clips with that tag. Click it again to clear the filter and show all clips.

Moving clips between storage

Each clip card has a Move button that lets you transfer the clip between storage locations:

  • Move to Document — Transfer a profile clip to the current document
  • Move to Profile — Transfer a document clip to your profile (makes it available everywhere)

Moving a clip removes it from the source location and saves it to the destination.

Inserting a clip

Click on a saved clip in the list to insert it into your document at the current cursor position. The text is inserted with its original formatting preserved.

Editing a clip

Click the edit option on a clip to update its name or tags. The clip content itself (the saved text) cannot be edited — save a new clip if the text has changed.

Deleting a clip

Click the delete option on a clip to remove it permanently. This cannot be undone.

Exporting clips

To back up your clips or share them with colleagues:

  1. Click the Export button at the bottom of the Clips tab.
  2. A JSON file is downloaded containing all your saved clips.

Importing clips

To import clips from a file:

  1. Click the Import button at the bottom of the Clips tab.
  2. Select a .json file previously exported from Template Helper.
  3. The imported clips are added to your existing clip library.

WARNING

Import is a Pro feature. Free users can export clips but cannot import them.

Clip limits

Only Profile clips count toward your licence limit. Document clips are unlimited for all users.

LicenceProfile clipsDocument clips
FreeUp to 2 clipsUnlimited
ProUnlimitedUnlimited

When you reach the free profile clip limit, you can:

  • Delete an existing profile clip to make room
  • Save new clips to the Document storage instead (unlimited)
  • Upgrade to a Pro licence for unlimited profile clips

TIP

Best practice: Use Document clips for temporary or document-specific content. Use Profile clips for text you reuse across many documents. This keeps your profile uncluttered and maximises your free allowance.
